Country classic or contemporary? Gloss white or denim blue? Wirework or wine rack? As the iconic US magazine House Beautiful says, “It’s going to be about dark colors, customization and convenience.” We’ve looked at the 2018 top kitchen trends as flagged by top interior design magazines and websites, and made a few predictions of our own.
Rich colour contrasts
Colour in the kitchen of 2018 is always a statement, even when understated! Look out for custom painted walls that contrast with the cabinet colours of 2018, including gentle greys and subtle tones such as Mussel and Porcelain. Go for ‘natural neutrals’ including sage greens and plum purples, or the oh-so-on-trend hues of blue that pack a punch of enjoyment, such as Fjord and Denim.
Banish the blender
Hate appliances left out all over the counters? Hide them away in an appliance garage (that’s a kitchen cupboard to you and me!) It’s simply a clever use of a counter level kitchen cabinet, to clear clutter and house the appliances you don’t need every day.
Forget chunky stoves that shout or giant fridge that dominate. 2018’s appliances are subtle, with high quality good looks and functions that you will really use. If you want to be totally on trend, go for darker shades of brushed steel.
From rich tempered glass and bespoke designer tiles to industrial metal and heat-resistant modern materials, splash backs are making a comeback. Practical, functional and now a feature again, almost anything goes material-wise. Just avoid kitch picture tiles with country vegetables on them, unless it’s part of a retro/80s theme, of course!
More space, more seating, more time to simply lean and chat, the kitchen island is the centre of the modern kitchen in more ways than one. It’s not just a work surface either; add instant hot water taps, pop-up plugs for appliances, the latest durable quartz countertops, and soft-close drawers for storage underneath.
Space for tech
Stay connected while cooking your carbonara, resting your roast or sipping that shiraz. 2018’s tech-savvy kitchen has allocated space for that tech you can’t cook without, from recipe apps on your tablet to the latest box set on Netflix streamed to your kitchen flat screen TV.
Warm, inviting, atmospheric – not words you’d usually associate with LED lighting. However, LED lighting has evolved into a versatile, innovative and simply clever way to turn your kitchen into a theatrical culinary space at the flick of a switch (or the swipe of an app).
“White Done Right”
Not our quote, but Beautiful Homes and Gardens. As the magazine says,
Consider your kitchen’s stone floor, backsplash, and trim to find the perfect shade of white for the space.
At Silk Kitchens, we’ve got a selection of the best 2018 shades of white for you to consider in both high gloss and subtle matt finishes; call us for full details.
We’ve always loved wooden floors, especially if they have languished unloved under lino or laminate in an old kitchen. With careful cleaning, sanding and staining, even the most humble pine floor can be restored to look its best, or even look like something more expensive, such as oak or maple. Warm to the feet, inviting to the touch, and all natural – what’s not to like?
Don’t skimp on your sink. Remember, every large pot, tray or designer casserole that can’t go in the dishwasher needs to fit comfortably in your kitchen’s sink. No wonder butler sinks are back, offering plenty of space and style for your paella pans and baking trays.
“Dark Colored Kitchens Are still Trendy”
So says Interiorzine, which also says that 2018’s kitchen will be about contrasting these strong colours with lighter, brighter colours for visual appeal and ‘pop’. So think dark tiles, countertops and floors in contrast to hand-painted kitchen cabinets in natural neutrals. Interesting!
